Are Elephants Being Eaten in Thailand?
A “new taste” for elephant meat is posing a new threat to the animals in Thailand according to a report from the Associated Press. Last month, wildlife officials say they found the remains of two elephants in a national park in western Thailand; Damrong Phidet, director-general of Thailand’s wildlife agency, said that the animals’ trunks and sex organs had been removed and that the meat would be consumed as “elephant sashimi.” Thailand’s National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department says that the country has about 4,000 domesticated elephants and fewer than 3,000 in the wild. Poachers are mostly after the elephants’ tusks, which can fetch from 1 million to 2 million baht ($31,600 to $63,300); baby elephants have also been captured to perform in shows. The price for an elephant’s penis is about 30,000 baht ($950). While demand for elephant meat is currently low, if interest increases, poachers will be quick to respond as Soraida Salwala, the founder of Friends of the Asian Elephant foundation, says..... more

A parliamentary committee has examined the possibility of a national day of remembrance, after the crisis between France and Turkey a few days ago
An Israeli parliamentary committee discussed today, for the first time in a public session, the opportunity to officially recognize the mass killing of hundreds of thousands of Armenians in the territories of the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1916 as a genocide. The debate took place within the Committee of the Knesset (Israel's unicameral parliament of the state) for education and culture, and concerned the possibility of dedicating a day of national commemoration of the event. The committee has not reached a decision and has postponed the discussion until a later date..... more

The Ancient World of Mesopotamia Ancient Iraq The fertile crescent, Iraq is home to some of the earliest cities in the world, where writing may have first developed between the Tigris and Euphrates Bronze head of a king, perhaps Sargon of Akkad, from Nineveh, Akkadian period, c. 2300 BCE. The two great empires, Assyria and Babylon, which grew up on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates, can be separated as little historically as geographically. From the beginning their history is closely intertwined; and the power of the one is a measure of the weakness of the other. This interdependence of Assyrian and Babylonian history was recognized by ancient writers, and has been confirmed by modern discovery. But whereas Assyria takes the first place in the classical accounts to the exclusion of ..... more

The blockbuster BBC series Frozen Planet, which looks at life at the cold ends of the world, has suffered intense media criticism over the use of zoo footage. Shots of a mother polar bear and her cubs after birth were filmed in a zoo because they’re impossible to film in the wild as the mother would kill the cameraperson – and/or the cubs would die as the den would be abandoned..... more

Is Bottled Water Bad for Your Health? •Dr. Mercola
• The next time someone offers you a bottle of water, take a stand and say something clever like, “No thank you, I don’t believe in it.” This simple move will open up a conversation about the massive swindle that is bottled water … and possibly persuade one more person to give it up entirely.
Even beyond the issues of your health and the environment, bottled water represents a novel form of privatization, in which private corporations have succeeded, and quite successfully I might add, at making water a commodity.... more

Who’s Really Committing Voter Fraud?
The conviction of a Republican operative has thrown the spotlight onto who is really committing voter fraud in the US. Right-wing news outlets have been claiming for years that liberal groups such as ACORN are behind ‘massive’ voter fraud operations. Despite investigations by the Justice Department only showing a tiny number of proven cases (86) over the past decade, Republican legislators in twelve states have passed legislation, on the basis of supposed fraud, restricting voting. Paul Schurick, an aide to former Maryland Republican Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., was convicted last week of attempted voter suppression..... more

Coaching & the Sexual Abuse of Children: Penn State Scandal The allegations of sex abuse of children by assistant coaches at Penn State University and at Syracuse University are a harsh reminder to parents of the need not only for background checks but of vigilance when their child is playing sports and when their child is spending any amount of time alone with a coach. Perhaps this sounds overly protective; some might argue that such a stance could bring into question relationships of trust and safety among parents and coaches. But as more victims of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky and of former assistant Syracuse basketball coach Bernie Fine come forward, the question arises: How were so many abused for so long?.... more
